Arbor Cosmica grew out of Panufnik’s lifelong fascination with the form and beauty of trees; the compositional diagram (see page 25) is based on the symbol of the Cosmic Tree which often appears in art and literature upside-down with its roots in heaven and its foliage running into the earth. Performances worldwide have prompted commentators to rank the work among the composer’s finest
